Tafazzul Ali : The Lyricist Who Made Mangaldai Proud

Whenever the word lyricist passes across a Mangaldaian, the name Tafazzul Ali automatically comes to his/her mind. Having said that, it would be injustice to attribute him as only as a lyricist. He is in fact one of the best lyricist Assam and Assamese music industry has ever come across and also an imminent litterateur. His songs has been sung by singers such as Shanta Uzir, Rajen Gohain, Biren Dutta among the many.

Taffazul Ali was born to Dr. Mahbub Ali and Sadiya Khatun on 16th of October 1929 in the Bhutiachang tea estate. He completed his secondary level education in Mangaldai Govt Higher Secondary School before moving to Cotton college for further studies.

As mentioned by him in his book, a HMV gramophone and a harmonium once bought by his father for recreational purpose of the family first generated his interest towards music as a child. He initially started his career as a singer but later turned on to be become a song writer and finally a legend of Assamese music. It was in 1948 when the Shillong Guwahati radio station was set up, he begun his career as a singer. He had the opportunity of getting lessons from the legendary Bishnu Prasad Rabha while he stayed in Tangla.

But many often forget his literary achievements. He was the editor of the first digest style Assamese monthly magazine named “Xangam” published from Dibrugarh. He has authored five books of songs “Mondakranta”, “Anustup”, “Xonali Sorai”, “Oghori Kokaideur Geet” and “Bohudin Bokulor Gondh Powa Nai”. He has also written an analytical book on Assamese music titled “Axomiya Adhunik Xongitor Xongitkar-xokol”.

Mangaldai Beats prays let he be an inspiration to many youths of  Mangaldai and let a cultural revolution begin in Mangaldai.
